Sonny Poor, 82, of Lawson, passed away after a brief battle with esophageal cancer on January 1, 2021, peacefully in his home surrounded by the love of his family. Sonny was born in Vienna, Missouri to Hazel and Edna (Hutson) Poor on January 13, 1938. He was raised and attended school in Vienna, graduating in 1955. Sonny married the love of his life, Ruth (Parker), on June 29, 1957 and faced every one of life’s ups and downs faithfully by her side. He was a loving and devoted father to his son, Mitch, and two daughters, Julie and Marla, and was equally as invested in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There was nothing Sonny loved more than his family and he was sure to show it by never missing a ballgame, practice, performance, birthday, graduation, you name it and he was there. Sonny worked for TWA as a mechanic, retiring after 38 years of dedication. He also had a creative side, spending many years whittling ordinary sticks and branches into works of art that his family treasures. Sonny’s greatest work, however, was the unconditional love, support, wisdom, and humor he poured into the lives of his children and grandchildren who will carry on his legacy and keep his memory alive. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Edna Poor, sisters Jane Feeler and Moezella Zender, brother Don Poor, and grandson Gunner Petty. Sonny is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Ruth Poor, son Mitch Poor and wife Susan, daughter Julie Lunceford and husband Shaun, daughter Marla Sears and husband Terry, granddaughters Mindy Rich and husband Joel, Makenna Petty, Karsten Byrd, and Zaylee Poor, grandsons Dalton Petty and wife Amy, Dylan Poor, and Brayden Byrd, and great-grandchildren Sloane Black, Eddie Rich, and Duke Rich. In keeping with Sonny’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services. A private graveside service with his family will take place Tuesday, January 5, 2021 under the direction of Hidden Valley Funeral Home of Excelsior Springs.
