Obituary of Mary Jane Hand

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Jane “MJ” Hand passed away peacefully at the age of 73 at the North Kansas City Hospital Hospice House on January 8th, 2021. Born August 21, 1947, in Kansas City, MO, she was the daughter to Virginia “Ginny” and Donald “Don” McLellan. Virginia later remarried after Donald’s death to James “Jimmy” McLellan who was also a caring member to MJ and the rest of the family. She went to high school at Bishop Hogan her first 3 years and then graduated from Southwest High School in Kansas City, MO. MJ was a loving sister, wife, mother, grandma, and friend to those who knew her. She married Patrick Hand on June 25th, 1974. MJ worked as an Endodontic (dental) Assistant for over 20 years. Her favorite pastime was hanging out with her “Bunco Babes” where she was the life of the party (as was true for any party she attended). She liked to go on cruises to travel and visit her brothers and sisters. Their adventures took them across the country, outside of the continental U.S. and to other countries. She was also known by her other nickname “Margarita Handez” which she got from her travels. MJ is known for her fun-loving personality, quick wit, and the lengths she would go to for others. She always had a dog by her side and adopted many of them through the KC Pet Project. MJ attended Masses at St. Ann’s in Excelsior Springs. She is survived by her son Michael and his wife Julia, granddaughters Alaina and Elysia; daughter Gia Barrett and her husband Shawn, grandson Steven Woods, Steven’s wife Danielle and granddaughter Abbi; and daughter Amy Amos and her husband Kirk, granddaughter Meghan and grandson Parker. She is also survived by her sisters Sharon Riddell, brother-in-law Charlie; Susie Ackland, brother-in-law Jeff; brother Rick McLellan, sister-in-law SuSon; sister-in-law Connie McLellan; and by 6 nieces and nephews along with great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Patrick Hand; and her brother, Donald “Donnie” McLellan. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the KC Pet Project in the name of MJ Hand
