Obituary of Zola Chesney

Please share a memory of Zola to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Zola Chesney, 85, of Holt, Missouri passed away on February 21, 2021 at home surrounded by her family. She was born on April 1, 1935 in Morrison, Oklahoma to parents John and Odessa (Laughlin) Downey. Zola's mother passed away on September 6, 1935 and she was then raised by her grandparents and family. She came to Kansas City to care for her sister, Helen, and her son, Jimmy. While in Kansas City she was encouraged to hang out with her sister's niece. That is how she met the love of her life, Jerry. Jerry was her new friend's brother. They were married on September 5, 1952. She stayed with his parents while he served in the United States Army. She went to work at Imco Plastics and became a lead person while there. Zola and Jerry adopted their son Shawn and five years later adopted their daughter Michelle and together they raised their children. She was involved in a lot of volunteer work through Tri County and took pride in watching the babies in the nursery at Northern Hills Baptist Church. She was an excellent cook and housekeeper and she took pride in her home. She took the best care of her family. When Jerry was diagnosed with cancer she made sure he got the best care until he passed. Zola loved all of her grandchildren with all of her heart and when her great grandchildren came along she had the same love for all. Her love and understanding never waivered as her kids and grandkids grew. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry and grandson Jeff Heitman. Survivors include her son Shawn and wife Paula, granddaughter Melissa and husband Matt, great grandchildren Aaden and Kennedy, daughter Michelle and husband Dennis, grandson Paul and wife Sunnie, grandson Donnie and friend, grandson Andrew, great grandchilren; Ayden, Peyten, Abby, and Patience, sister Goldie Brulja, numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends. She will be greatly missed by all she touched. We can rejoice and take comfort in knowing she is with her husband and grandson and all who have gone before her.
