A man of faith, a man who proudly loved and served his country in the Army Security Agency as a morse code interceptor, and over 25 years in the CIA mostly covert in remote outposts, covering 4 continents and more than 15 countries and paying the ultimate price by enduring capture and torture as a hostage. Sober for over 36 years he freely shared his sobriety journey - during treatment when he knew he could go on no longer, kneeling by his bed he felt the hand of God hold him firmly down on the bed and heard a voice telling him to turn his life and will over to God and all will be well. He did just that and for over 20 years he served as a counselor and program director sharing his healing gift helping over 1,000 people to a life of sobriety. He always said, “An alcoholic/addict takes silence as acceptance. Time for everyone to stop being silent about the elephant in the living room.” Born in Minneapolis, Douglas grew up spending his summers on his grandparent’s Eva and Helmer Peterson’s Brookston, MN farm. He was particularly blessed to have spent time with his grandmother, Laura Lindamood who he was convinced was his guardian angel. Most of all Doug loved his family and best furry friend, Angel. Douglas is survived by the love of his life and soulmate, Deborah Ann; his daughters, Wendy (Greg) Deyo and Laura Roach; his “bonus” children, Aimee (Paul) Johnson, Rob (Molly) Rebholz; grandchildren, Ashley and Lauren Deyo, Hannah Roach; “bonus” grandchildren, Annaliese, Orion and Alex Ferrell, Riley and Vinny Rebholz, Matthew and Tyler Johnson. great grandchildren Brantley Deyo and “Lady” Adaline Krogsveen. He was preceded in death by his daughter Karri, his parents, Neil and Elaine, brother, Dennis. Memorials can be made to family which will be used to support small farming organizations, or the veteran’s service organization of your choice.
