Minnie will be remembered by her family and all who knew her for her sweet, soft and welcoming nature. Her family was important to her as can be seen in the many photos she has taken over the years to capture memorable moments. We are thankful that mom leaves us her treasure chest of photos to be enjoyed and shared with many generations to come. Minnie was born on October 2, 1940 to Fidelis Ikaika Akiu and Annie Kuanoni Paauhau in Waiohinu, Hawaii and was the 5th of 12 children. She had numerous aunts, uncles and cousins that enjoyed old Hawaiian style living by farming taro to sell to the factory, fishing and hunting to sustain the family, as well, picking coffee to earn wages. She told stories about catching Opelu with her dad and sister Mary “Girly”, they would clean, salt, fillet and dry their catch in the sun and share their bounty with family. They sold fish also to earn money for the family. She talked of following her mother who was a ‘free spirit’ to Hawaiian kupuna affairs where she made traditional Hawaiian leis, Lauhala hats and bracelets, feather leis, and more. A life that used the resources around them to provide for their families. As an adult she moved to Oahu to live with her Aunty Minnie. While there she met her husband of 61 years, Leo Ronald Davis Jr., who was a Navy serviceman at Pearl Harbor. They were married on July 16, 1960 in Redondo Beach, California. Shortly thereafter, they settled in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, where they raised their family, close to family and friends. Minnie worked at the Mid-Continent Library in Excelsior Springs for 12 years. She loved books and it was important that her kids were avid readers and was known to tell us, “go read a book”; a habit that remain with us today. She worked also at Liberty School Bus Transportation for many years as a school bus driver for kindergarten and elementary school-aged children. She loved the kids and they loved her. She and dad enjoyed eating breakfast and visiting with the regulars at Debbie’s in Excelsior Springs. At one time, they enjoyed time together as members of the Square-Dancing Club. When Dad passed in March 2020, she reconnected with her Hawaiian culture by taking up hula with daughter Theresa, granddaughter Maddy, great-grandson James and others. After hula, she enjoyed eating at her favorite Hawaiian restaurant. She looked forward to her weekly hula lessons, her Hawaiian food and embracing her culture. Minnie leaves behind her children Mark (Katy) Davis of Wood Heights, Theresa (Jeff) Rice of Lawson, and Sherry (Alex) Ortiz of Hawaii, 10 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. She is survived by sisters Mary “Girly” Hanley of Washington, Teresa “Lei” Duarte, Juliette “Kahana” Kealamakia, Vicky “Malu” (Spencer) Akiu, Ruthie (Rodrigo) Sadumiano and brothers Fidelis Akiu, Tony “Boy” Akiu, Charlie Akiu, Clarence (Beatrice) Pi, all of Hawaii, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Minnie was preceded in death by her husband Leo Davis, Jr, son Ron Davis, brother Albert Pi, Jr, and sister Annie Taisee. Graveside funeral services will be held 11 am on September 1, 2021, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Excelsior Springs, Missouri.
