At an early age Don joined the Excelsior Springs Boxing Club and found much success as he would become a Golden Gloves champion of Kansas City, St. Joe, and also Springfield. He was a strong supporter of the Kansas City Golden Gloves and National Golden Gloves and donated much of his time helping with the Lawson Boxing Club coached by the late Dennis (Blimp) Zekeil and the Lathrop Boxing Club coached by the late Jimmy (Bulldog) Anderson. Don joined the USMC on May 24, 1954 and received an Honorable Discharge with the rank of Sergeant and received the National Defense Service Medal - Good Conduct Medal. Don loved sports and enjoyed watching his grandkids and great grandkids play and attended many of their games. Don loved to go camping and fishing and spent many hours on the lake snagging for spoonbill or setting out jug lines and trot lines and also loved crappie fishing. He would make the trip every year to Sedalia, MO to see the Missouri State Fair and watch the opening ceremonies as well as watch the parade and camp out for a few nights and catch a concert while there. Don was a member of the Eagles of Excelsior Springs and the Veterans Club of Excelsior Springs and never knew a stranger. He will be sadly missed by family, friends, and all that knew him.
