Obituary of Arthur Allen Atkins

(Arthur) Allen Atkins, 95, of Lawson, Missouri passed away January 13, 2022 at Liberty Hospital after suffering a stroke. He was born August 23rd, 1926, the son of Everett and Tommy Fern (Holman) Atkins. He graduated from Lawson High School in 1944 and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving aboard the US San Francisco in the South Pacific. Upon his discharge he enrolled in the University of Missouri where he received a B.S. in Agriculture. He entered the MU Extension Service and served in Marshall and Platte Counties, eventually joining the Edwards-Atkins Construction Company of Platte City, Mo. After buying out the Edwards brothers, the Atkins Construction Company built miles of conservation terraces in Platte County for many years. He married Betty James Atkins November 24, 1948 and lived in Columbia, Marshall, and Platte City, Mo. before moving to her parent’s farm in 1980 where he farmed full-time, raising Charolais cattle. He served on the Missouri Farm & Home Insurance Board for many years. He is survived by their four children, sons Lyle Atkins (Pam) of Overland Park, Kansas, and Daryl Atkins (Linda) of Lawson, two daughters, Gayle Geiger of Lawson and Nancy Parsons (Tim) of Richland, Iowa and 8 grandchildren, Kurt Geiger (Linzi), Klynt Geiger, Kyle Geiger (Roberta), Matthew Parsons (Jen), Phillip Parsons (Jessica), Daniel Atkins (Amaris), Jonathan Atkins (Amy), and Melody Syphert (Tim). Also surviving are 19 great grandchildren and a sister Donna Smoot of Excelsior Springs, Mo. along with many other nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife Betty Atkins a grandson Andrew Atkins, four brothers, Floyd, J.T., John, and Marvin Atkins and two sisters Ruth Rudd and Rita Wilson Rabe. A Memorial service held on Saturday January 22, 2022 at Old Union Church, Lawson at 11:00 am was preceded with a visitation at 10:00 am. He leaves a legacy of faith, hard work, and honesty which his family seeks to honor by following his example. He loved his family, his farm, and his cattle. He had a life-long love of music and sang at many funerals over his lifetime. His favorite song was “My Tribute” which says, “To God be the glory for the things He has done.” He will be sorely missed by friends and family.
