Joy Ann Robertson was born on December 30, 1938—weighing less than 4 pounds—to Zelma Catherine (Etherton) Senciboy and George F. Senciboy in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Joy departed this life on Thursday, February 17, 2022 in Lawson, Missouri, having reached the respectable age of 83 years, 1 month, and 18 days. Joy grew up with kind, hard working parents, and 7 siblings (all preceded in death): Truman, Opal, Bobby Jean (Bob), James Porter (J.P.), Billy, Irene, and Elmer Dale. While growing up on a farm in Ste. Genevieve County of southeast Missouri, Joy would learn from her father the importance about treating their mules like family for all their hard work. Joy’s mother instilled life-long values into her from a young age that included the importance of feeding relatives and visitors of all walks of life, and that family dinners were not a special occasion, rather they were routine and an understood expectation to be carried-out. When Joy was just a young girl, she would have her brother, Truman—who would become a World War II veteran as a member of the United States Marine Corps—carry her home for miles after school departed, when attrition settled into her petite legs. Joy would often spend time during her childhood with her sister, Opal, and brother-in-law, Roy. Joy had such fond memories of Opal’s blackberry dumplings, and for years afterword would laugh as she told the story about how Opal—in the middle of the night—heated up a flashlight in a pan of water instead of the baby’s bottle. Roy always emphasized to Joy the importance of serving her neighbors by always lending a helping hand, which she did all throughout her life. Joy loved and cherished all of her siblings, just as she did with all of her kin and generations of family that followed. In adulthood, Joy was involved in factory work as a young woman. She quickly decided to try the medical field by performing hospital work by being a nursing assistant, and never changed career fields again. Joy had a passion for the medical field and operated in the career path for over 40 years in a vast amount of medical facilities. As a young woman, Joy entered motherhood, having birthed Lee Roy McDaniel, Brenda Senciboy, and Eva Jean Robertson. On May 19, 1972, Joy married George Ernest Robertson and spent a beautiful 48 years and 9 months together, where he preceded her in death. Joy loved her family more than life itself, and was notorious for her phenomenal cooking, which she enjoyed frying chicken, making bread and rolls from scratch, and even participated in homemade meat-making and fish-frying with her husband, George. With each large, delicious meal, she would quietly say, “it’s not much.” Joy is survived by her son, Lee Roy McDaniel; daughter, Eva Jean (Robertson) Scoma and husband, David; grandchildren: Robyn Shelly, Zachary McDaniel, Matthew Morris and wife, Carmie, Melissa Morris, Christy Scoma, David Scoma Jr., Matt Scoma and wife, Sami, Corey Scoma and Makenzi Turley, and 20 great-grandchildren.
