STEPHANIE (granddaughter):
I always enjoyed the time I spent at the farm. Waking up early to get the eggs from the chickens with Gma and going to get the milk from the guy down the road from the farm or helping split the peas that grew in the garden. That was something that showed me appreciation for getting things done differently.
Gma always had a smile on her face and was always very optimistic about life. I remember when that stupid rooster chased me around the farm and I tried hiding behind a tree in front of the house and the stupid thing found me and pecked my ankle. She came and shooed it off and got me inside to make sure I was OK. Then had the guys catch it and chopped its head off, because I think it had been chasing us kids around for a while, but I can’t remember exactly why.
JOHN (grandson):
There was a cow that got in her garden and she was hitting it with her broom. But the cow just ignored her and kept on eating!
RACHEL (granddaughter):
I remember having the best time with my brothers jumping from the hay loft, above the stalls onto the hay bales below, as the big old scary goat was there in the pen watching us with his weird goat eyes. I remember shooting skeet in the back pasture and getting lost in the corn field with Jake and Amanda, making the biggest leaf piles to jump in and playing many games of croquet, having sleepovers outside on the trampoline and swinging SO high on the tree swing; learning to drive on those gravel roads wearing goggles because the F150 roof was caved in and had no windshield.
STEVE (Son):
We moved down from Wisconsin and lived in a farm house in DeSoto, Kansas. Which at the time was vast wilderness. We had a German shepherd named Fluffy, and we also had a St. Bernard named Barney. When it lightninged outside he would snap his chain and break right through the screen door to get into our house and hide, sometimes he made room for himself under the bunk beds.
I remember a time that I rented a trailer, hooked it up to my red Chevy pickup and drove to Turney to pick up dad and we drove to St. Joe because he bought that Farmall Cub tractor and we brought it home. Mom got on it and started driving it around. He tapped me on the shoulder as we were leaning up against the bed of the truck watching her drive it, and he said “that makes it all worth it”
I remember mom just out of the blue would start humming or singing a song like Beautiful Dreamer. She always encouraged us kids to draw or paint, she would tell me about my kids’ drawings and how every line had a reason. She was always encouraging and say how beautiful their artwork was, never a critic.
