I have had the honor and pleasure of knowing Carroll Surber for close to 40 years. My first memory of meeting Carroll was after a William Jewell College basketball game where he gave Neil an indiscrete $50 handshake. There were many of those throughout college and then continued after Neil and Mary Ann were married and Katelynn and Anna came along. After a visit by Grandpa and Grandma there was always money hidden somewhere. Might be in the freezer, micro-wave, doll house, coffee pot...but somewhere for sure.
This is just one example of what a kind and generous man Carroll Surber was. Not only with family but friends and strangers alike. There was one time that groceries were taken out of the back of Carroll's truck before he got home. His response was "well I guess they needed them worse than I did". How forgiving and kind hearted is that way of thinking? But do not mistake his kindness for weakness. Carroll would let you know his mind if he felt someone or something was wrong.
People that knew Carroll might describe Carroll in a way as simple. Things DID seem to be simple for Carroll. There was right and wrong, true and false, good and bad. He had the ability to break down issues to a common sense "simple way". But he was by far from being simple. He was often the smartest man in the room, certainly the most logical and without question the funniest with his dry wit and quick sense of humor.
Carroll was a man of faith, honesty, integrity and good temperament. He was a devoted and loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Cousin and friend. What I saw in him was a teacher. He held wisdom that few have and the ability to share it in a non-condescending way with regard to most any subject or issue.
In closing, one thing is certain Carroll Surber will be missed by many and for many reasons. But I believe he will be missed most because he made a difference in every person and life he touched and encountered everyday.
And that is a life well lived.
With Deepest Respect and Sorrow.

My Uncle Surb’s presence was felt by multiple generations. An integral part of my family’s life, he rejoiced during our good times, shared in our challenges, and was involved in every step of our life journey. Our family will miss Uncle Surb at our family gatherings and holidays but celebrate the legacy he has left for all of us.
2 Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful.
